In the ongoing project “Not My Child, Not Your Child,” my work considers the subject of war. Born in response to the military recruiting materials sent to my teenage sons, I began scanning, deconstructing, manipulating, and reconstructing these pamphlets and letters to develop imagery that alters their original message. Kathe Kollwitz’s “Helping Russia” inspired me to combine the figure with censored text in my monoprint “Dear Parents, Redacted: Arms #2”. I was drawn to the power of Kollwitz’s haunting imagery, her concern for her fellow man and her response to human suffering. I was particularly moved by her hand imagery, which became a focus in my work. My print was created using a photopolymer etching process, selectively inking a la poupée and painting onto the plate.
