Feeding
Feeding
Brian Kreydatus Wiliamsburg VA 2014 Woodcut 13 x 12" I have chosen to respond to Kathe Kollwitz lithograph “Helping Russia.” I remember being introduced to Kollwitz’s work as an undergrad and she’s been a major influence ever since. What I love about Kollwitz is how she explores universal human experiences. This sort of territory usually leads to generic, slogan driven work, but not with Kollwitz. She arrives at the universal through specific form and honesty about emotional experience. My image “Feeding” is a direct response to “Helping Russia.” “Helping Russia” was created as response to a famine threatening millions in the Soviet Union. My image also deals with food and hands but as the quiet domestic ritual of feeding my son, James. Kollwitz lived in Germany experiencing both World Wars. She drew what she knew firsthand. I try to do the same in my work.
