Father Holding His Son
Father Holding His Son
Carlyn Ekstrom Watertown MA 2014 etching with aquatint and spitebite 15 x 22” NOTE: Inspired by 2 prints: August Brouet ACM 92.027and Forain ACM 80.344 I am interested in contemporary children and their relationships in families. “Retour de l’enfant prodigine” expresses the profound reunion of a suffering parent with a formerly lost child. “La Famille” is an idealized print of a warm and nurturing family. My etching is a continuation of my exploration of my own childhood and relationship within my own family, but this print is taken from the third generation, a portrait of my son holding his three year old son. The relationship is the same as in the “Prodigal Son,” but less fraught and more tender, a little closer to the feeling in “La Famille.” What interests me most is that it is a portrait of a young father holding his young son. I don’t think there were many portraits of this pairing done in my childhood.
