Hamaguci Yozo’s black and white intaglio of a leaf is an example of the visual power of an image that is simple and direct. Hoping to capture a similar quality, I gravitated toward a centralized, spare composition to image the silhouette of an uprooted plant. The visual source materials for “Thresh” are uprooted oxeye daisies, flattened with an emphasis on the quality of dense, nuanced darks from the heavily layered drypoint burr. The work explores the metaphoric potential of the plant form, and the possibility that the depiction of the subject matter can be both observed and suggestive.
