There are two aspects of Hopper’s masterful print that have most engaged me. The first is the wonderful use of darks and lights to create his night scene. His darks create mystery while his lights convey clarity. It is this balance that I found most difficult and also that I learned the most from in creating “Shadows of the Night.” The other aspect of “Night Shadows” that intrigued me was the energy and motion in Hopper’s lines. Using mostly straight lines Hopper sweeps our attention onto the figure, light, and long shadow of his print. My print, using both straight and curved lines, also attempts to focus our attention and energy to vital points of the print. “Night Shadows” as inspiration has been rewarding in the creation of “Shadows of the Night.
