I Once Had a Rose
I Once Had a Rose
Jayne Reid Jackson Madison WI 2014 Mezzotint 7 x 9” My inspiration is Edward Hopper's “Night Shadows,” a line etching of a man walking along a dark street, viewed from above. The emphasis here is on the light and elongated shadows. It is a piece I remember from childhood for its value and am always surprised to be reminded that it is done totally with line. My work is done in mezzotint, working from dark to light using value instead of line. I took Hopper's composition and translated it into a still life. I use my still lives as metaphors for the human existence and record these unstill lives that change as the elements and time work around them and with them.
