Michael Arike Mamaroneck NY 2015 etching/aquatint 8 ½ x 12” Edward Hopper's etching "Night Shadows" inspired me to create my etching/aquatint "Little West 12th Street". His etching was apparently done from the vantage point of the old 3rd Avenue El, while mine is a view from the much more recent High Line. From this height the shadows are elongated, and the street and sidewalk are flattened. This creates a different, almost voyeuristic point of view in which you begin to wonder about the people you see—the man in Hopper's print, and the young couple in mine. The buildings, too, have a forceful presence, making you question their part in the story. I have always been inspired by Hopper's integration of places into the whole narrative, often adding a sense of mystery and intrigue.
